Project Universe: November 2002 |
A New Vision for the Future
Cosmos cannot survive alone in the modern world of increasing globalisation.
ISD has a vision for a world class teaching and research Unix service. This
will be achieved by dissolving the two existing Unix services and building
a genuinely new service, Universe, and by truly radical thinking.
Summary of Project Universe
- finally backup and delete unused Cosmos accounts;
- backup and delete unused Eric accounts too;
- upgrade/patch/firewall Eric's 11 clients (ensure each no longer
authenticates via Eric);
- patch Eric (Cosmos was very recently patched);
- add eUMIST/LDAP authentication to Eric;
- move from NIS+ to NIS on Eric;
- share Cosmos' disks with Eric if necessary;
- obtain and install new disks for Eric: 9Gb --> 36Gb;
- install software apps a la Cosmos on Eric;
- create Universe:
- doctor Eric and Cosmos so both appear as Universe;
- URS changes?
- DNS entries for <username>.unix.umist.ac.uk;
- determine policy for users (i.e., who goes on Eric, Cosmos);
