By default the environment variable TEXFONTS is unset, so TeX looks
in default places, including /var/texfonts. If TEXFONTS is
set and does not include /var/texfonts then TeX and its associated
utilities, including mktexpk, won't find font files which actually exist,
write up till the moment at which it tries to rebuild it...
