• Paul Sheer's Rute User's Tutorial and Exposition, Page 322, gives a good introduction to initrd, initial ramdisks.
  
  
• The shell script /sbin/mkinitrd is of interest but does not do what we are after --- its for ensuring access to modules such as SCSI drivers which may be needed at boot time but which are not available within the kernel itself.
