Linux Installation: Information Particular to UMIST

Distribution

Remember we only support RedHat. We may be able to help with other distributions, but there is no guarantee.

We sell CD's of the RedHat Distributions (copies of the ISO images to be found on mirrors of the RedHat FTP site), cost £15.

Network

If your Linux box is connected to the network you will need the following information:

IP Address
This number gives your machine a unique identifying number on the Internet:
    130.88.<building>.<host>

Name servers:
Domain Name Servers are machines that convert human-friendly hostnames such as talby.csu.umist.ac.uk to IP Addresses, and back again. It isn't necessary to specify all three but it's a good idea, in case one Server is "down". These values may be used:
    Primary DNS 130.88.13.7
    Secondary DNS 130.88.200.6
    Ternary DNS 130.88.210.1

Hostname
The name will be
 <my_computer>.<department>.umist.ac.uk
You can choose the value of my_computer freely (provided noone has already taken that name). For example, my machine is called talby.csu.umist.ac.uk.

In addition there are four futher values which need to be set. The values shown are for illustration only and should not be used --- consult your Departmental Computing Officer for actual values):

  Netmask 255.255.255.0
  Network 180.88.<building>.250
  Broadcast 130.88.<building>.255
  Gateway 130.88.<building>.250
