The RedHat manual Section 13.7 tells how to add LDAP authentication to the PAM authentication on a RedHat 9 box. I followed this, then tweaked the LDAP configuration, which is to be found in /etc/ldap.conf (below) and then actually created a sample LDAP-authenticated account or two on the GBTC machines (with bollox in the password fields in /etc/shadow). All is well.
