Configuring Pine

Using smtp.umist.ac.uk

Choose SETUP and then Config; the option smtp-server should be set:

     personal-name = <No Value Set: using "Dr Simon Hood">
     user-domain = <No Value Set>
     smtp-server = smtp.umist.ac.uk
     nntp-server = <No Value Set>

Once this is done Exit Config and Commit Changes (answer yes).

Setting the From: Header --- Pine Roles

Things That Don't Work

...setting personal-name and user-domain (either via SETUP from the menu, or by editing .pinerc, for example

    # Over-rides your full name from Unix password file. Required for PC-Pine.
    personal-name=mummy.bear

    # Sets domain part of From: and local addresses in outgoing mail.
    user-domain=umist.ac.uk
does not work --- delivered email looks like
    From: "mummy.bear" <[email protected]>
where mum is Mummy Bear's account name on the local machine.

Use a Pine Role instead.

Using a Pine Role

(Thanks to Nick Stevens for this) :

Start Pine and enter the 'Settings' menu by typing 'S' then 'R' to enter
the 'Rules' menu. You are prompted to select a type of rule, so hit 'R'
again to select 'Roles' and 'A' to add a new role.

Set the Nickname to be anything, e.g. 'UMIST', then scroll down and set
current folder type to be either 'email' or 'any'.

In the 'Current Message Conditions' section, leave all the patterns
blank, and set all the other conditions to 'Don't care, always matches'.

In the 'Actions' section, set the 'From:' address to the actual email of
the user, and leave the rest blank.

In the 'Uses' section set everthing to 'Without confirmation'

Hit 'E' to exit, 'Y' to commit the changes, and that's it.

Inboxes: /var/spool/mail, POP and IMAP

By default Pine reads your standard Unix mail inbox (e.g., /var/spool/mail/username). Pine can also connect to IMAP servers accounts to read mail. As of July 2000 UMIST does not have an IMAP server.

Pine is unable to connect to POP servers.
