What's PDF? How can I view such a file?

PDF is Adobe's Portable Document Format. Try planetpdf for information, tools...for PDF. A free (beer, but not speech) PDF-viewer (and printer) can be downloaded from Adobe's web site.

Why does it keep locking up?

I have come across two answers for this. First, the connection between your client (browser) and the Doc-U-Lib server is slow; secondly, when uploading in particular, the size of the file is significant --- if it's some huge thing like a 20Mb PDF full of pictures then it'll take a while thinking about it...
