Accessing Cosmos via X (using eXceed) |
To access Cosmos from a Windows platform, use
eXceed
or
XFree86/Cygwin
this cluster, use eXceed. To get going, start
eXceed, then a terminal (xterm) and an editor, as below:
From the menu:
- Start->Programs->Unix Systems->xterm session.xs.
- Fill in the User ID and Password.
- Click OK.
- Start eXceed: Start->Programs->Exceed->xstart.
- Fill in the form...
- Program Type: X Window
- User ID: your account
- Host: cosmos.umist.ac.uk
- Password: your account
- Host Type: leave blank
- Command:
| /usr/openwin/bin/xterm -ls -sb -display 130.88.???.???:0
|
--- where the question-marks are replaced by the IP address of your
machine.
- Then click "Run!" You should get an xterm (a terminal window) displayed.
Many editors on Cosmos:
- dtpad, similar to Windows' Notepad: within the terminal type
or, if necessary
- gedit, the standard GNU/GNOME editor: within the terminal type
or, if necessary
