1. Introduction

Three sets of Fortran compilers are supported by ISD: the Sun Workshop compilers for Solaris; the Numerical Algorithms Group (NAg) for Linux (on both Intel and Alpha platforms); and the GNU compilers, available on "almost every" platform.

We have a site licence for the Sun Workshop compilers --- administrators of all Solaris machines at UMIST can freely install and use these compilers. Copies of the installation CD may be purchased from ISD Helpdesk for £15. These compilers are fully supported by ISD (Level 1).

We have a site licence for the NAg Fortran compilers for Linux on both Intel (PC) and Compaq/Digital/Alpha platforms. These compilers are supported at Level 3.

The Gnu Compiler Collection (GCC) includes a Fortran 77 compiler; we offer Level 4 support the GCC on all platforms.

Later sections of this document cover: problems found with the Workshop 5.0 debugger, dbx; some help with writing make files for Fortran 90 programmes (consisting of several source files); some pointers to free compilers which are available (including those for the "F" language, a "safe" subset of Fortran 90) --- though we do not support these; and some pointers to Fortran-related sites on The Web.
